Internal Family Systems (IFS) Therapy

Internal Family Systems, or IFS, is a therapy approach that helps you understand the different “parts” of yourself and the roles they may have learned to play.

You might recognize a part that overthinks, keeps everyone happy, shuts down, stays busy or becomes highly critical. Rather than trying to get rid of these responses, IFS approaches them with curiosity and explores what they may be trying to protect.

Navigate Wellness offers virtual counselling incorporating IFS for eligible clients in BC and select provinces and territories.

How can IFS help you understand your patterns?

IFS can help make sense of reactions that sometimes feel contradictory. One part of you might want change while another feels afraid of it. You may know intellectually that something is safe while another part continues to respond as though it isn't.

IFS creates space to understand those different responses with less judgment and more curiosity.

Common Concerns that IFS can Target

  • Relationship struggles and communication challenges

  • Difficulty making decisions or trusting yourself

  • Feeling "stuck" in old patterns or survival strategies

In an IFS session, we work collaboratively to connect with the different parts of you — the protectors, exiles, and inner critics — with curiosity and compassion. Rather than pushing these parts away, we invite understanding, creating a sense of safety within your system. Sessions are guided by your pace and readiness, supporting deep emotional healing over time.

The benefits of IFS therapy include:

  • Gaining a deeper sense of self-awareness and inner balance

  • Healing emotional wounds and past trauma at their root

  • Building more compassionate, trusting relationships with yourself

  • Reducing internal conflict and emotional overwhelm

  • Feeling more grounded, resilient, and free to make authentic choices
