What Guides Us

Finding Your Way Doesn't Mean Leaving Parts of Yourself Behind

Navigate Wellness is a Chilliwack, BC-based counselling practice offering integrative therapy grounded in self-understanding, nervous system awareness, and the pursuit of embodied coherence: a sense of alignment across mind, body, and soul.

We believe that meaningful change is most sustainable when we stop fighting against ourselves and instead, start to build collaboration amongst the experiences, emotions, beliefs, and protective patterns that shape our lives.

We recognize that being human is complicated. We often know what we want but still struggle to move toward it. We can understand our patterns intellectually and yet still find ourselves repeating them. We can hope for change while simultaneously resisting it.

Our thoughts, emotions, and nervous system responses are interconnected, but they don't always move in the same direction naturally.

Rather than seeing these contradictions as evidence that something is wrong with us, we like to approach them with curiosity.

Through collaborative counselling, we’ll help you explore your internal experiences, develop greater awareness of your emotional and physiological responses, and discover ways of moving forward that reflect your values and intentions.

We believe that meaningful change begins not with rejecting who we are, but with learning to understand and work with ourselves more fully.

There Are No Bad Parts

One of the ideas guiding our work is that even our most difficult emotional and behavioural patterns can have understandable origins.

Anxiety, avoidance, anger, perfectionism, and self-criticism may develop as ways of protecting ourselves, maintaining relationships, or navigating challenging experiences.

Some of these responses become familiar patterns in how we think and behave. Others may be reflected in automatic nervous system reactions, such as heightened alertness, tension, or withdrawal.

At Navigate Wellness, we approach these experiences with curiosity rather than judgment. We draw on therapeutic approaches such as Internal Family Systems (IFS) to explore what our different responses may be attempting to accomplish and how they might relate to one another.

Understanding a response doesn't mean we have to agree with it, act on it, or allow it to continue directing our lives.

It means we can begin to recognize its purpose, appreciate the circumstances in which it developed, and explore whether other responses might now be preferable.

We don't have to reject parts of ourselves in order to develop new ways of being.

(Take a look at the book, No Bad Parts, by Richard Schwartz, the founder of Internal Family Systems therapy if you’re curious about this!)

Beyond Intellectual Understanding

Understanding why we think, feel, or behave a certain way doesn't always mean we're able to respond differently.

Our nervous systems can develop familiar patterns of responding to stress, relationships, and challenging experiences. Even when we recognize that a pattern no longer serves us, our emotional and physiological responses may not immediately reflect that understanding.

We value nervous system awareness as part of bridging the gap between insight and lived experience. By becoming more curious about our bodily sensations, emotional responses, and automatic reactions, we can begin to recognize patterns and explore new possibilities.

This process isn't about achieving constant calm or eliminating discomfort. It's about developing greater awareness, flexibility, and choice in how we respond to ourselves and the world around us.

Meaningful change isn't only something we understand. It's something we learn to experience.

Embodied Coherence: Aligning Mind, Body, and Soul

At Navigate Wellness, we use the term coherence to describe a growing sense of alignment between our thoughts, emotions, senses, physical reactions, beliefs, and sense of meaning.

Our nervous systems play an important role in the experience of alignment. Automatic physiological reactions can influence how we interpret situations, experience emotions, connect with others, and make decisions. Developing awareness of these responses can help us understand why certain patterns persist, even when our conscious intentions suggest a different direction.

Essentially, when aspects of ourselves feel disconnected or in conflict, we may experience confusion, emotional distress, difficulty making decisions, or a sense of being stuck.

Our counselling approach explores how these internal experiences relate to one another and how we can respond to them with greater awareness and intention.

For some clients, this involves processing trauma or exploring protective patterns. For others, it means reconsidering long-held beliefs, understanding emotional responses, or reconnecting with personal values.

We recognize that spirituality and questions of meaning can be important aspects of psychological well-being. We also recognize that these experiences are deeply personal. Spiritual exploration is never a requirement of counselling at Navigate Wellness. Clients are welcome to explore their own beliefs, values, and questions without pressure to adopt a particular worldview.

Coherence doesn't mean eliminating internal conflict. It means developing the capacity to navigate it without losing connection to yourself.

Who We Work Best With

We believe that meaningful therapeutic change is a collaborative process.

We often work particularly well with people who are curious about themselves, open to considering new perspectives, and motivated to create change in their lives - even when they feel uncertain about how to begin.

Some of our clients have spent years trying to understand patterns they can't seem to change. Others are navigating anxiety, trauma, relationship challenges, major life transitions, or a growing sense that something in their lives no longer feels aligned.

You don't need to arrive with a clear understanding of yourself or a perfectly defined goal.

What matters is a willingness to explore, reflect, and participate in the process.

We often encourage regular sessions, particularly in the beginning, to help establish a strong therapeutic relationship and build momentum. The frequency and direction of counselling are always discussed collaboratively, with consideration for your needs, goals, and circumstances.

If you're ready to explore not only what you're experiencing, but what might become possible through greater coherence, Navigate Wellness may be a good fit for you.

Questions Worth Exploring

Do I need to be spiritual to benefit from counselling at Navigate Wellness?

Nope! Navigate Wellness welcomes clients with diverse spiritual, religious, and secular perspectives.

We recognize that questions about meaning, identity, values, and purpose can be important aspects of psychological well-being. For some people, these questions involve spirituality or faith. For others, “spirituality” and “faith” are words that don’t really resonate.

Our role isn't to prescribe a particular worldview, but to support clients in exploring their own experiences and developing a greater sense of personal alignment.

Spiritual exploration is always guided by the client's interests, beliefs, and goals.

What if I've tried counselling before but still feel stuck?

It's possible to develop considerable insight into our experiences and still struggle to change familiar emotional or behavioural patterns.

At Navigate Wellness, we recognize that intellectual understanding is valuable, but doesn't always translate into a different lived experience.

Our integrative approach creates opportunities to explore these patterns from different perspectives, including emotional experiences, protective responses, beliefs, and nervous system awareness.

We work collaboratively to understand what may be contributing to a sense of stagnation and identify approaches that support meaningful change.

Previous counselling experiences can be an important part of this exploration, and we welcome conversations about what has or hasn't been helpful in the past.

What can I expect when starting counselling at Navigate Wellness?

Counselling at Navigate Wellness begins with getting to know you: your experiences, what brings you to therapy, and what you hope to explore or change.

Our approach is collaborative and guided by curiosity. Together, we'll begin identifying the patterns, emotions, and experiences that may be influencing your life, while considering which therapeutic approaches best support your individual needs and goals.

We recognize that meaningful change takes time, and that developing a trusting therapeutic relationship is an important part of the process. Regular sessions, particularly in the beginning, can help establish a foundation for deeper exploration and continued progress.

You don't need to arrive with everything figured out. A willingness to explore your experiences with openness and curiosity is a meaningful place to begin.
